BANKIE'S HOT TAKE #92 - Mark Briscoe Wins ROH World Championship

REACH FOR THE SKY, BOY!

Mark Briscoe has become Ring of Honor World Champion, defeating Eddie Kingston on April 5, 2024 in a fantastic battle at Supercard of Honor 2024 in Philadelphia, PA, the birthplace of the legendary independent promotion.

In a physical encounter, loaded with hard strikes, throws to the floor, and bloodshed, “the Sussex County Chicken” persevered with a Jay Driller to become ROH World Champion inside the Liacouras Center.

Philadelphia is where the Briscoe Brothers had several of their biggest ROH moments. Mark accompanied Jay to the ring for his match against the Amazing Red in the first singles match in company history. They had their first two ROH Tag Team Title opportunities in classics against champions Red and AJ Styles in 2003. In 2007, the Briscoes started their long rivalry with Kevin Steen and El Generico at the National Guard Armory in Philly during the Fifth Year Festival. In 2008, they ended their one-year long feud with the Age of the Fall inside of Steel Cage Warfare at Glory By Honor VII inside the ECW Arena.

In a serious case of serendipity, Mark’s championship win was eleven years TO THE DAY when his brother won his first ROH World Championship against Kevin Steen during Supercard of Honor VII in the Hammerstein Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

As the majority of the wrestling industry knows, Jay passed away tragically at the age of 38 on January 17, 2023 in a car accident. Mark and the entire Briscoe family came through on the other side, working through their grief and struggles, especially Jay’s two young daughters that recovered from serious injuries suffered in the crash. Mark, with pain in his heart and memories in his mind, continued on the journey of being a professional wrestler.

And tonight, the thirteen-time ROH World Tag Team Champion and ROH OG won his first ROH World Championship.

From February 23, 2002 in the Murphy Rec Center to the Liacouras Center on April 5, 2024, he has seen it all. From RF Video to Cary Silkin to Sinclair Broadcasting to Tony Khan, Mark Briscoe has experienced every nook and cranny of Ring of Honor.

And now, his ROH journey continues as the 40th ROH World Champion in company history.
