A sad day for independent wrestling in the Philadelphia area yesterday, as referee Nick Papagiorgio officially announced that he was stepping away from refereeing after an eighteen-year career.

Papagiorgio has been, despite his evil ways, a phenomenal wrestling official. A mainstay of the Philly area, his work in Combat Zone Wrestling and H2O Wrestling has been second-to-none. His work has been so exquisite that he was inducted into the H2O Hall of Fame and had his banner on the wall with other H2O and independent wrestling legends.

HQ Founder Jon Harder had this to say regarding the announcement this morning.

“Despite his wicked ways, Nick was on the top of his field as an independent wrestling official. The fact that I was able to call some of his performances as the evil referee for the Creamy World Order is something I value. Behind the scenes, he was a solid dude and an easy guy to talk to. I hope many aspiring referees watch his performances and see what he did. Even in a comedic role at times, he never once took away from the performers in the match. He will truly be missed in the game.”

Nick was an unsung and versatile performer in the indies and he will be missed. Thanks for everything, Mr. Papagiorgio, and we hope to see you down the road.
